There are various types of cutting tools to choose from, from band saws to scroll saws and jigsaws.

In this article, we’re going to talk about circular saws.

Any type of saw you choose has its own specific uses, some are designed to make straight cuts and they do better than any other power tool, while some are designed to make miter and angle cut more than any other device.

Before buying any tool it’s good to know all the features and specifications it should have before investing your money in it.

In this circular saw buying guide we’ll look into what circular saws are, the features you should be looking for in any circular saw, some tips that will help you make the right buying decision, and then lastly review some of the best circular saws that are currently available in the market.

What’s A Circular Saw?

Before going into the details you need to first understand what circular saws are and what they’re capable of doing on the job site or in the workshop.

In simple terms, circular saws are hand-held power devices equipped with flat blades and are used for cutting wood, metal, and plastic.

Circular saws are best used in projects that require smooth and straight lines cuts, they’re ideal for use in projects that demand the changing of blades multiple times when working on different materials with different strengths.

Circular saws come with a switch closer to the handle so that it’s easier to use for the operator. Circular saws are one of the safest cutting devices to work if you really don’t want to compromise on your safety.

Benefits Of Using A Circular Saw

With a lot of models and brands out there, it’s going to be difficult to decide whether a circular saw is worth your investment or not.

Buying a circular saw is among the best investments you can do for your workshop if you’re a regular user of wood, metal, or plastic.

A circular saw will definitely revolutionize the way you handle cutting tasks in the workshop, they’re easier to use even for beginners.

Circular saws are your best option if you want to obtain clean cuts for your working pieces.

The circular saw is the perfect tool for cutting and tearing various materials, they’re also good when it comes to decorative punching. In order to make use of the tool for cutting or tearing, you only need to provide support for the working piece against a stable and solid surface; you then start carving the pieces from the material.

Circular saws also can allow the user to make bevel and plunge cuts without the need to change another set of blades.

Making bevel cuts is possible by positioning the blades at the right angle so that you can start cutting the material at the desired angle. You can place the blade through the workpiece or just cut off some part of the surface.

Most circular saws can make bevel cuts, it’s just that the outcome depends on the experience of the user, each circular saw come with clear instructions on how to make clean bevel cuts.

Another use of circular saws is in making plunge cuts.

Making plunge cuts is similar to making straight cuts, the only difference is that plunge cuts are initiated from the middle instead of starting at the edge.

For DIYers that are working on their roof or doing some remodeling projects, a circular saw will be really helpful to them because it can perform most of the cutting task you’ll be dealing with in such projects, with the right set of blades a circular saw can make large cutting depths than most other cutting tools that are available.

Cordless Or Corded Circular Saws

Before you start looking for any circular saw there is the need to figure out whether you need the cordless or corded version.

If you have a consistent power supply in your workstation you should choose to work with the corded version because most of the time they’re more powerful and effective since they have enough power to drive the motor.

On the other hand, if you sometimes struggle with the power source and like to work with a portable device, then the cordless version might be your best choice.

The cordless versions are a good option for individuals or contractors that move from one location to another, with the cordless circular, saw they will not worry about the power source.

Left-Handed Vs Right Handed Circular Saws

The next aspect to consider before buying any circular saw is the side you work on the most, you want to make sure that you’re comfortable working with any circular saw you choose to work with.

Most power tools are designed for right-hand use only, but if you’re a left handed-person which is rare, there are saws designed for people like you.

There are tools that are even designed for both left and right-hand use. If you can find one with such a feature it’s better to go with it since it’s more versatile, even if you’re right-handed there are projects that might require working on the left side, in such situations circular saws with such features can be really helpful.

Features To Look For In Any Circular Saw

Now it’s time to see some of the features you should look for in any circular saw, the features that are equipped in any circular saw will determine its performance and its stability.

It’s important to check out for these features or you’ll end up jumping from circular to another and this will result in wasting a lot of your hard-earned money.

Grip

Choosing a good grip is a must because it will decide on the comfort you get when operating any circular saw.

There is the need to hold the handle of any device before buying it, the handle of a good circular saw should be made with soft material like rubber to provide an excellent grip to the user.

A good grip will give you more control over the device during operation; it will reduce the vibration produced.

Without a good grip, you can’t use the device for long hours, you’ll get tired after working for a few minutes and a bad grip will also place the user at high risk of fatigue.

Trigger Safety

A good circular saw should have a trigger that’s easier to reach and also has a lot of protective measures.

You should be able to reach the trigger with your thumb easily without the need to keep the device, and this also applies when making bevel cuts.

If you had to change the location of your hand before reaching the trigger then you comprise on your grip comfort and this can lead to unexpected accidents.

You should avoid any circular saw that requires you to move your hand before reaching the safety button. These types of saws are awkward to work with.

Weight

Weight also plays an important role when it comes to the selection of circular saws.

You should determine how you want to use the saw. If you’re the type that moves to different job locations daily, then a lightweight device will be the best choice for you because you’ll have easier mobility, but on the other hand, if you have a workstation where you spend all your time working with the saw, going with the heavy-duty ones will be better because they’re more powerful than the lightweight ones.

The lightweight circular saws also aren’t left behind when it comes to performance if you choose the right one.

Depth Adjustment Settings

Setting up the depth adjustment is very important because you’ll be dealing with different materials that have different thicknesses.

If it’s difficult to set up the cutting depth you won’t enjoy working with your circular saw.

The depth scales should be easier to reach and shouldn’t be something that’s complex for you to manage.

Bevel Angle

Most of the time we deal with cutting various shapes in our projects.

A saw with poor beveling capacity can’t fully satisfy your cutting needs.

Look for a circular saw that has a wide range of bevel settings. Some saws come with 5 degrees interval starting from zero, while other saws have an interval of one degree only. You should go with the one-degree interval or a saw that comes with the shortest interval. This helps you make the precise bevel angle you want to make at each level.

Accuracy

Who doesn’t want to obtain a perfect accurate cut? If your saw can’t provide you with accurate results then it’s of no use.

Choose a circular saw that comes with excellent precise cutting capabilities. It should be able to follow your cut lines accurately and you should have excellent blade visibility and guard retraction. These features will help you get clear visibility of your cut marks during operation and will help you obtain precision cuts smoothly.

Visibility is really important when it comes to getting accurate results.

If the blades aren’t visible enough to allow you to see through, following the cutting line will be difficult.

The blades of the saw shouldn’t be facing you, because your cut line will be unobstructed, but if the blades aren’t towards you, there will be a challenge for you to view the cut lines because your visibility is blocked by upper guard casing, your hand that’s at the front of the knob, or the retracting lever.

The Lower Guard

The lower guard should be well designed so that it can retract freely when making cuts with the device no matter what the cutting angle is or blade depth.

The best guard to choose is the one with an angled lower edge and has a rounded lobe so that it can ride up on the working pieces.

You should choose a lower guard that’s made with cast iron and the one that has a rough edge instead of the one that’s perfectly smooth.

The Shoe

The shoe plays an important role when it comes to making bevel cuts.

Most saws nowadays have a shoe that will cut away from the middle and this will produce a small bearing surface to keep the saw steady.

If there is variance in the shoe flatness more especially along the width, it will make the saw tilt and can bind during your cutting process. This type of bending will affect your angle settings and result in poor shapes.

To get the best result you should test out the device first before making the purchase. Try to make angle cuts and see if it can do the job effectively.

Always remember that the saw should be flat and should have rough edges that are set parallel to the blades!

Extra Features To Look For

Since we’ve listed some of the basic features to look for in any circular saw, there are certain features that aren’t mandatory but are also very useful and will enhance the performance of your saw.

Some of the extra features to look for include LED light, which can help to illuminate your working space.

And also check for a dust blower to minimize flying dust in your surroundings.

There are other accessories to check for depending on your taste; the more accessories a tool have the more expensive it’s going to be.

What You Need To Know Before Working With A Circular Saw

Check The Saw

Before you start operating any saw you should first conduct a safety check.

Test the blade guard to ensure that it’s retracting properly and can snap back when it’s released.

Check the tooth of the blades to make sure they’re not broken or have chipped teeth; any blade with damages on it should be replaced or fixed immediately.

For corded saws check the power code to ensure there are no cracks and for cordless saws, you should make sure that they’re fully charged.

When tightening, loosening, or replacing the blades you should unplug the device, and if it’s cordless saw remove the battery.

These are all safety measures that will help you minimize accidents when using the saw.

Inspect The Blades

The performance of your device will depend on the state of your blades.

It’s very important to check out the blades more especially if you haven’t used the device for a long time.

Check the blades to make sure they don’t have any rust or have become dull, and check blades with missing teeth.

You should also consider using strong blades, even if the one that comes with your device is weak, you should consider replacing it with stronger blades.

The carbide-tipped blades are the best blades to work with. They’re the best when it comes to crosscutting and rip cutting, adjust the blade properly depending on the type of material you would like to cut. Make sure that it doesn’t exceed more than ¼” ahead of the board’s edge.

With the right blades you cannot only cut wood, you can cut other hard materials like plastic, ceramic, aluminum, or metal sheets. It can also be used in construction sites to cut concrete, stone, and brick.

You can cut a lot of materials with a circular saw with ease, it all comes down to the strength and settings of your blades.

Position The Saw Properly

There isn’t a rule that states the direction you should face when making a cut, but for more convenient use and performance the motor of the saw should be facing the largest part of the board which will not fall down when making a cut.

This ensures that the shoe and the base plate will be completely supported through operation and you won’t experience much weight of the saw.

Making Accurate Cross Cuts

The circular saw is the easiest tool anyone can use to make perfect square crosscuts in any given material.

You should hold up the saw in position so that the blade is on the cut line, you then move the square towards the base plate, then press tightly towards the edge of your board.

You should make sure that the blade is not in contact with the board, you now pull the trigger until the saw reaches its full or designated speed. Now you can guide the saw along the square so that you obtain clean, smooth, and accurate results.

Preventing Binding

If you’re dealing with panels or plywood there is the need to provide good support.

This helps avoid unwanted kickbacks when the blade is pinched during your cutting operation.

Precise Rip Cuts

Rip cuts are the types of cuts that are in parallel with the grain of the wood or any material you’re using. This is in opposition to crosscutting which is across the wood.

A lot of circular saws these days come with a rip guide that’s made with metal which is attached to the base plate of the saw.

This guide is good but it’s limited to the types of rip cuts it can make, it can make no more than 6”. The best option is to tight the 8 ft board in a position that can be used as a straight edge guide.

Avoiding Splintering Of Wood

When working with a circular saw splintering most of the time happens on the top surface.

Of course, this isn’t a problem when working with floor joints or when cutting wall studs, but when you’re dealing with hardwood or plywood, it can be somewhat troublesome.

In order to solve this issue, you should place the panel or board with the surface looking downward, this way any splintering that arises will take place on the backside or the top side.

Clamp, Stack, And Cut

If you’re dealing with multiple plywoods that are of the same size, you should use the gang cutting technique.

You should stack multiple pieces of the same size together like four or five on top of each other, clamp them together, and adjust the blade to the appropriate cutting depth so that it can cut through the materials. You then place your saw to cut through all the plywood at once.

Making Safe Bevel Cuts

Almost all circular saws have a beveling capacity that’s up to 45-degrees.

The base plate is however tilted all over, the lower blade guard can catch on the edge of your material.

When this occurs don’t put more pressure on the saw. You should first release the trigger, raise the blade guard with your hand and then start making the cuts. Once you have cut like one inch into the working piece, you can now release the guard.

Making Long Straight Cuts

Sometimes you want to make long and straight vertical cuts onto a wall.

With a circular saw, you can achieve this with much ease, and all you have to do is to place the saw at the end and then start cutting downward.

By doing this you’re working in the same direction as gravity, the weight of the saw is acting on the material, but if you’re moving upward you’ll experience a lot of weight since you’re against gravity.

So here are some of the basic features you should be looking for in any circular saw. We’ve mentioned some of the features to look for and the various types of saws to choose from.

When it comes to choosing any circular saw you should plan your projects carefully and examine the different types of cuts you wish to make. You then choose a circular saw that has the same cutting capabilities that your project demands.

Choose a powerful circular saw that’s good enough to cut through most of the materials you’re working with.

The circular saw should be able to cut hard materials like ceramic and stones, even if your project doesn’t require the cutting of ceramics and stones. You don’t know what might happen in the feature, and that’s when your circular comes in handy.

Choose a powerful motor because that’s the strength of your machine, a less powerful motor doesn’t have the strength to cut hard materials, a strong motor and powerful blades can cut through almost every material you can think of in the workshop.
